3. Translate the following passage into English (5 Marks)

सम्राट अशोक, चन्द्रगुप्त का पोता था। अपने पिता की मृत्यु के समय वह उज्जैन का सूबेदार था। चन्द्रगुप्त के मरने के 24 वर्ष बाद वह सिंहासनारूढ़ हुआ। आरम्भ में अशोक को शिकार का बहुत शौक था और उसे युद्ध कला भी पसन्द थी। सिंहासनारोहण के बाद उसने कलिंग पर चढ़ाई की। यद्यपि वह इस युद्ध में विजयी हुआ परन्तु इसने उसके हृदय पर एक गहरा घाव छोड़ा। इस युद्ध में कई लाख आदमी मरे, कई लाख घायल हुए और बहुत से बीमारी से मरे। यह दृश्य देखकर अशोक का हृदय परिवर्तित हो गया। उसे युद्ध से घृणा हो गयी। उसने दुबारा कोई युद्ध नहीं किया और अपना सम्पूर्ण जीवन प्रजा हित में लगा दिया।

Emperor Ashoka was the grandson of Chandragupta. At the time of his father’s death, he was the governor of Ujjain. He ascended the throne 24 years after the death of Chandragupta. In the beginning, Ashoka was very fond of hunting and liked the art of war. After his coronation, he attacked Kalinga. Although he won the war, it left a deep wound on his heart. Lakhs of people were killed, many were injured and many died due to disease. Seeing this destruction, Ashoka’s heart changed. He developed hatred for war and never fought again. He devoted his entire life to the welfare of his people.
